Behind the Film:"Passing Me By" By Marisa Edler

This year our Junior Choreographic show is a little different from past years due

to the pandemic. My process was different because my dancer, Lauren Woodward, is

doing school remotely from her home in Ohio. So we did all of our rehearsals over

zoom! We choreographed a whole dance over zoom, which was challenging yet

rewarding. We met on zoom twice a week, and during our zoom rehearsals, we would

generate choreography together to create my piece, "Passing me by." Dancing on zoom is

a different experience compared to dancing in person. It was a challenge sometimes to

teach movements and to express the tiny details I wanted my dancer to do. Since I

wasn’t physically in the same space, it was also hard to get the full effect of the

movements.

If you are wondering how I filmed my piece, let me tell you! My dancer’s

friend does videography and photography, Emma Leu, filmed the whole dance while I

was on zoom, and I was telling her every shot I wanted. Despite the challenges, I was

able to create a four-minute dance with my dancer. This semester was not what I

thought my junior year would be, let alone the junior choreographic show. This

experience is something I am grateful I had the opportunity to do, and I would not have

wanted it any other way! I hope everyone checks out our show, "Framing Figure"s and

appreciates all the hard work everyone put into it!
